Aviation Psychiatric Services

Dr. Hunt specializes in performing aviation related psychiatric assessments requested by the FAA, aviation medical examiners (AMEs), pilots, and other parties. He has extensive experience conducting examinations for aeromedical purposes, and has familiarity with aviation standards.  He has worked with professional pilots, general aviators, air traffic controllers, student pilots and other organizations.  He is dual board certified in general and forensic psychiatry, and is a HIMS designated psychiatrist*

Aeromedically focused psychiatric assessments may be required by the FAA or others to assess mental health conditions, substance use or other issues, due to the potential effect on the fitness/functioning of a pilot and longitudinal implication of illness. 

Dr. Hunt commonly provides services related to: 

  • Psychiatric assessment needed to qualify for or maintain Airman Medical Certification.

  • Evaluation of psychiatric medication use in aviation (i.e., FAA SSRI/antidepressant protocols)

  • Evaluation of substance use, treatment and recovery

  • HIMS assessment and program participation

  • Assessment of medicolegal issues impacting aviation fitness or medical certification

  • Employment related fitness for duty

 
* A HIMS designated psychiatrists is a psychiatrist who has received specialized training and is qualified by the FAA to evaluate pilots with alcohol or substance use concerns or psychiatric issues, as part of the FAA's Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) program.
